Here are two links you might like then! After reading Ruth Beechick's The Three R's and some of her other books, I knew that this was just what we needed in this season of homeschooling and family. I have used information from her books, files and posts from Beechick online groups, and my own thoughts and needs to put together these two files to cover math and language arts in a Charlotte Mason/Ruth Beechick fashion. It would be helpful to borrow The Three R's OR An Easy Start in Arithmetic and A Strong Start in Language from the library.

These would be perfect to use along side one of our unit studies (yes, I'm still writing more!). You need no additional books or texts. You might like to borrow living math books and living grammar books from your library though! These two files will help you teach the subjects to your children in a real life context, using concepts instead of rote memory, and help them gain a solid foundation in true understanding of the topics! No more meaningless step-by-step boring worksheets. My kids and I are truly enjoying school and learning together in this way and I am loving our time together, even when it's school time, being fun. They are learning SO much too!

They contain:
*A grade by grade, concept by concept checklist of skills for PK-3rd grade (grades are just general guidelines, NOT mandatory expectations. Go at your child's pace!)
*Room for notes and mastery dates
*LOTS of games and activities, including directions, organized by concept. (Boardgames, card games, homemade games, manipulatives, hands-on/physical activities, using snacks, etc.)
*Ideas for teaching math in real life context at home, in the kitchen, during chores, at the store, etc.

*The Language Arts file also includes order of progression for dictation/copywork and narration,
*a complete phonics guide with step-by step instruction with flexibility to teach at your child's pace and in whatever order you desire as well as how to incorporate handwriting, and plenty of fun ideas for reinforcing and teaching phonics in each stage
*ideas and methods for teaching spelling,
*and all other areas of language arts (oral, written, grammar, usage, etc.)

I just received two new games today and I think they are worth a mention as well as an activity idea.

Timing it Right for digital/analog time telling and associating an amount of time with certain activities.
Pharaoh's Phonics for early phonics and new readers to learn to build words. They are given a target letter and use randomly drawn tiles to try to be the first to fill their pyramid with 3,4,& 5 letter words.

They both look like a lot of fun and very effective with the targeted skill.

I have several others I have my eye on and will list them soon even if I wind up not purchasing them.

The activity idea I had worked great with my K'er and my 3rd grader. I gave them both paper circles, rectangles, and squares. My K'er had the job of drawing lines on each shape to show at least 2 ways to make 1/2 and 1/4 (horizontally then vertically...). Then he got to cut them out which was just fun Smile
My 3rd grader had to mark lines to show 1/2,1/4,1/3, & 1/6. She then cut them out and compared 1/2 to 1/4-- determined how many 1/4s equal a half and the same with 1/3 and 1/6. You should have seen her little mind working trying to figure out how to cut that circle into thirds! She made the connection that the easiest way to make quarters was to make halves, then cut that into halves...then easiest way to make sixths was to make thirds and cut those into half. She also saw why 1/2 is bigger than 1/4 even though 4 is greater than 2 and so on. It was a great success with multiple "ah ha!" moments!! cheers

I am interested in the S&S links but I can't open them once I've downloaded them. Not sure why. Something about not having enough space although I have plenty. Is it a huge file? Is there any way to get them in a pdf file?

Thank you!!
Christie

Hi Christie,
They are not large files, so I'm not sure why there is any trouble opening them. I will happily send you the files in pdf. I don't have a way to email you through the boards with attachments though. So, you can just send me an email and I'll reply back with the files. Would you like all 3?

For anyone else that may be having trouble, I'll make an attempt to post them in some other formats to download as well.
